I accidentally trained my dog to want to stay in the house rather than go in her outside enclosure after our walks. We had two weeks straight of rain. Every walk rendered Shiloh a soggy mess. I'd put her in the coat room with towels and her treat puzzle. She'd get dry, the dirt would fall, I was happy - until I realized she no longer wanted to be outside in her enclosure after a walk - she wanted to be in the coat room solving puzzles and eating treats!

Oh no haha! To be fair, I’d take puzzles and treats over pretty much anything some days!

Every evening we go through a series of “let me out and come back in so I get I treat” moments. It’s a whole thing, not as good as snuggles/butt scratches, though!

That’s such a good example! You have a smart pup there!

Lol Jeanne, I had to laugh at this because my dog has this one down pat 🤣 She will literally come inside and sit directly facing her treat jar, staring at it.

I love this 😀 ❤️

Freya I posted a question above for you about a mystery dog behavior we need you to solve...

I accidently trained my dog Opie to drag his butt on the grass because when he first started doing this, I praised him thinking it was a cute "trick" he could do on cue (he does many other fun tricks)! Now he usually does this automatically after he poops, or sometimes in front of COMPANY. I know, I know...you're going to say, "It's because his anal glands are impacted" but guess what: my vet trims our dogs nails once a month and has checked his anal glands repeatedly and they are always SQUEAKY CLEAN! However, my Chiweenie Olie's glands are often plugged and need to be expressed. My vet thinks that Opie developed this behavior to actually CLEAR his glands...so its like he instinctively knows he can keep the glands empty by exhibiting this embarrassing behavior across my lawn, carpet, or wherever he feels like dragging his hiney.

Oh nooo that’s so funny! Pants loves to kick up a storm after she poops in public, sometimes flinging said feces into the air. It’s really special, zero out of ten, cannot recommend.

My butt scooter does the same thing! A d my Chiweenie Olie NEVER did this but picked up that habit by watching Opie!

I love that Olie picked it up from Opie, that’s so funny! Any idea why they do that? It’s always been a mystery to me, especially since Pants only does it on walks, not in the yard. Also, your dogs’ names are so cute.

HEY! I just saw that @Freya V Locke (dang, can't tag her!) is a DOG BEHAVIORIST! And, she has letters behind her name! Freya, do you know why some dogs will scratch the ground and kick grass after they poop? I'm not sure about Pants, but mine are both reactive, neutered male (former shelter) dogs if that helps.

Hi,

It is one of those things we may truly never know for 100% but in my opinion:

Some dogs scoot to finish emptying their glands, or to even wipe their bottoms clean. If they are scooting at other times too, maybe check for worms.

The grass kicking could be an attempt at covering up the wee or poo, to disguise it from would-be predators (dogs are both predator and prey) or even simply cleaning their feet.

Some dogs get into habits of doing it in certain places, others do it everywhere or nowhere.

Funny canines!

That’s so interesting! Thank you for your expertise!

I've heard that they do the scratching like that to spread their scent. I mean as if CRAPPING isn't smelly enough, right? But I'm not sure of that. Maybe someone else who reads this knows and can comment? Both my knuckleheads are VERY reactive towards other dogs. Is Pants reactive towards other dogs or dominant? And I chuckled at Pants's name! There must be a good story behind how you came up with that name!

Dezi does this weird thing where she'll sit right in front of the couch with her back toward me and throw her head back. She doesn't stop the head-throwing until I rub her chest lol. She is such an attention whore...and I'm here for it 😁

Omg I would pay money for a video of that. I bet it’s adorable!

Haha I do have a video, but can't post it here. If I put it in Notes I'll tag you 😁😁

You’re the best! I have a video of Sammy giving me a hug, but the quality is so bad you can barely tell what’s happening.

As a solo person living alone I find it SO hard to capture the best mannerisms on camera. I totally get it!

That’s why my Sammy video was so bad!
